So moving forward…..

I Finally got some time to setup Server 2008 on my basement computer, only to find that some of my Capacitors are starting to bulge on the motherboard.  OH JOY OF JOY’S!

Needless to say i just have to keep the server limping along for now, I can’t afford to a: build a new server and also i cannot b: afford new SATA Drives for a new server to keep me rolling.

So i just need to keep it going and limping along for now.  Eventually i may get something like an ICY Dock that accepts IDE Drives, but that’s a bit later on down the road.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd after a bit of looking just now, i think i dunno what i will do.  I think, my best bet, is to buy a damn PCI RAID Card that i then stick the two 400GB drives in as ah well.  I still have time to figure it out, but i DO want an external RAID Array if possible.

It’s funny because i have the options of:

RAID 0 of the two 400GB Drives giving me a mirrored 400GB Storage Space

RAID 5 of 3 of the drives (max partition 320GB) giving me 640GB of space

RAID 5 of all 4 drives (max partition 250GB) giving me 750GB of space to use.

The funny part though is that the further i go down that list, the more work i am putting in for less gain, lol  and i feel like i am just wasting the potential of the 400GB Drives since RAID will force me to only use a size that is the smallest possible size of the unit.

Ah well, perhaps i should just settle with whatever i can find.

But beyond that, eventually i want to buy one of  These Fancy Servers for cheap. Reason for this is that, eventually, this will run my home domain (and possibly run stuff externally like websites and wordpress blogs and such *wink wink*.  I love the fact that it is dirt cheap, and can use up to 12GB Ram.  I also know that with the RAM above 6GB and the processors it has, that using VMWare Server on it will allow me to built 3 or 4 small virtual servers for services (DNS, DHCP, Etc) and run those on there and BLAMMO full on domain style stuff.  Then i create a Virtual Linux computer and i can use that for MYSQL and WordPress and stuff, and well, let’s just say it will do everything i want on one machine.  Eventually, i will be able to do everything i want, eventually.

Ah well, that’s all i will geek out on for the moment, i could keep going, but that was fun :)
